When the weather starts heating up and it means we no longer have to burrow under heavy blankets at night. Unless you're my daughter. Lillian has a fleece Elmo blanket my mom made her for Christmas. It's her favorite blanket, which means that it goes to bed with her each naptime and bedtime. It wasn't enough to just have in the bed with her, she had to be covered up with it. I started to sweat just looking at her. I tried to convince her to use one of her lightweight blankets, but she insisted on her Elmo blanket.
The solution...make a lightweight Elmo blanket for the summer. To keep things fair, Levi chose Cars fabric for his. These blankets are quick and easy to put together. They can be used as bedding or kept in the car for a small picnic blanket or to snuggle with on a long car ride.
I made them similar to how I made Lillian's flannel baby blanket, just without the rick rack around the edge. I used one yard of each fabric-one side is flannel to make it cozy, but still lightweight and the other side is the cotton of your choice. For an even lighter blanket, you could use cotton fabric for both sides.
The kids have put their blankets to use for the last month and are loving them.
